.My Story
My journey began with my parents, Ginette and Gracia, who had left their homeland, Haiti, in search of a better life and a brighter future for the family they planned to have. Driven by the dream of providing their family with opportunities they could only imagine in their homeland, they embarked on the challenging path of immigration.
For years, Ginette worked tirelessly to bring her family to the United States, demonstrating incredible determination and sacrifice. With unwavering love for her husband, son and her daughter, she overcame numerous obstacles and bureaucratic hurdles, making immense sacrifices to ensure the successful journey of several members of her family.
Flash forward, my early years in Boston were marked by a tight-knit and loving family. I attended an all-girls Catholic school, where I received a quality education and developed a strong sense of community. My family's bond was rooted in the rich Haitian culture we proudly preserved and celebrated. From the vibrant sounds of kompa music to the savory aromas of traditional Haitian cuisine, our home was a haven of cultural richness and familial warmth.
In 2011, tragedy struck when the matriarch of our family, my loving mother, Ginette, passed away. It was a heartbreaking loss that deeply affected not only myself but my entire family. However, the legacy of Ginette's determination and unwavering love endured, and it became the driving force in my life.
Flash forward again, now as a single mother raising my young son and taking care of an elderly father, I worked to embody my mother's resilience and strength. I have worked tirelessly to provide for my family and ensure that they thrived. My dedication is unwavering, and I have tried to carry my mother's legacy forward with every step that I have taken.
Throughout my life, I have harbored a dream – a dream to own a business that would pay tribute to my mother, my Haitian culture, and the tenacity it took for my family to venture to a new land and start anew. With that dream burning brightly in my heart, and the loving support of my husband, I have embarked on a journey to establish a business that would celebrate the beauty and culture of the Caribbean… and so became Nubian Nirvanaa.
This business is more than just a venture; it is a labor of love, a testament to the immigrant experience, and a celebration of mine and countless other women's heritage. I have tried to create a space that showcases not only Haitian culture but other Caribbean, African American and South American art, clothing, and accessories as well, inviting others to explore and appreciate the vibrant culture of the Caribbean and Africa.
Through my parent’s story and my business, I wanted to inspire others with similar experiences coming from immigrant parents, or immigrants themselves, to take pride in their identity, embrace their roots, and recognize the beauty of being a black woman with island heritage. I want to stand as a symbol of strength, resilience, and cultural pride, and I hope that my journey will showcase the enduring power of preserving one's heritage while achieving personal and professional success.
In the end, my biggest hope is that my story is a testament to the enduring strength, love, and the pursuit of dreams that define the immigrant experience in the United States.
